On the Red Carpet at the 2014 Emmy Awards

At the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards Monday night in Los Angeles, Lena Dunham may have made the biggest visual impact — and not for the right reasons — but at least she had heads turning in her voluminous pink ombré Giambattista Valli ballskirt.

The rest of the Hollywood pack looked predictably safe except for a few standouts like Lizzy Caplan in a dramatic black-and-white gown from Donna Karan Atelier, Sofia Vergara in a va-va-voom Roberto Cavalli and Claire Danes in lacy red Givenchy Haute Couture. Valli, who has been steadily gaining red-carpet momentum over the last few seasons, dressed three other actresses this year, which may or may not offset the Dunham effect: Allison Williams in a frothy ballgown, a pregnant Amanda Peet in a floral-printed chiffon frock that she described as “very ‘Virgin Suicides’” and Michelle Monaghan in a white dolman-sleeve sheath straight off the couture runway. It was so pristine, she said, “that I even air-kissed my nine-month-old son good night because I didn’t want to get anything on it.” In a sign that perhaps fashion is taking a backseat to Instagram and YouTube viral videos, some reporters resorted to feeding actors and actresses pizza on the red carpet.

The DIY mask that gives you shiny Kardashian hair :

How to Get Shiny Kardashian Hair From an Avocado

This summer, every Friday for fun and easy do-it-yourself hacks.
Say what you will about the Kardashians, but if you try and argue that their hairdoesn't shine like spun silk, then you're flat-out lying. Kardashian-level glossiness is nothing to be sneezed at, and we promise, it doesn't take an entourage of top-of-the-line hair stylists to achieve the sheen. In fact, we just picked up an avocado at the bodega, fished out a can of coconut milk from the depths of our kitchen cabinet, and we always have maple syrup on hand, because pancakes.
So is this a hair mask or guacamole? Ah, but these foods double as wonderful nourishment for your locks. The omegas in both avocado and coconut milk moisturize and repair summer-damaged hair, adding shine in the process. Maple syrup (or honey) also conditions and adds shine. And while it's optional, we gave our formula a superfood boost with lemon oil, which is particularly helpful in combatting both thirsty locks and a dry scalp (since our sun-drenched strands have been looking rather straw-like lately).
And whadya know? The combo actually smells quite nice.

HERE'S A PHONE-CHARGING BRACELET YOU MIGHT ACTUALLY WEAR

Looks like a bracelet, charges like a charger. Photo: Q Designs
There's no cell phone owner who doesn't understand intimately the special agony of watching their device drain and then... die. It's a universal. Most people have a plan B: Use a Mophie juice pack, bring along a charger and pray for an outlet — or this reporter's favorite, hang out in a bar for an hour and use the bartender's charger. There'salways one behind the counter.
A new startup called Q Designs is hoping to make juicing on the go a bit more convenient than that. Today it's launching pre-orders for its first product, a sleek bracelet that conceals enough rechargeable lithium-ion battery to give your phone a 60 percent charge. The bangle, available for both Android and iOS devices, unhooks to reveal the connector. We took a look at one of the prototypes a few weeks ago, and it's really, truly not bad-looking. It comes in black, silver and gold, the last of which co-founders James Kernan and Alessandro Libani say they spent a lot of time getting exactly right. The bracelet is still fairly thick — according to Kernan, making it any thinner would reduce the charging potential significantly — so it's a statement, but a clean one.
